Toilet Training Readiness: Signs Your Child Is Ready

Few milestones cause more second-guessing than toilet training. One week your child seems keen, the next they want nothing to do with the potty. The good news is that toilet training goes far more smoothly when you wait for genuine readiness rather than a date on the calendar. Most children show they’re ready somewhere between two and three, though every child is different. Here’s how to spot the signs, start gently at home, and how our educators at Dashing Ducks in Castle Hill help carry the process through the day.

Signs your child is ready for toilet training

Readiness shows up in small ways. Your child might stay dry for a couple of hours, tell you when their nappy is wet or dirty, or take an interest when you go to the bathroom. Some start to dislike the feeling of a soiled nappy and ask to be changed. Others can follow simple instructions and pull their pants up and down on their own. You don’t need every sign at once, but a handful together usually means it’s worth a try. The parenting team at Raising Children Network has a helpful readiness checklist that’s worth a look before you begin.

How to start toilet training at home

When the signs are there, keep it low pressure. Let your child pick a potty or a step-up seat so they feel some ownership. Offer regular, relaxed visits. After meals and before bath time are easy ones to remember, and praise the effort rather than only the result. Dress them in clothes they can manage themselves. Accidents will happen, and how you respond matters more than the accident itself. A calm “let’s try again next time” keeps the whole thing feeling safe. Children who feel rushed or scolded often dig their heels in, so patience really is your best tool.

How we support toilet training at our Castle Hill daycare

Toilet training works best when home and care move in step. When you let us know you’re starting, our educators at our Castle Hill centre follow the same gentle routine you use, with regular bathroom visits and plenty of encouragement. Because our rooms are full of children at similar stages, your child sees others giving it a go, which is often more persuasive than anything an adult can say. Our approach sits within the Early Years Learning Framework, which puts a child’s growing independence at the heart of everyday learning. You can read how we partner with families on our testimonials page, where parents often mention how reassuring that shared approach feels.

When it isn't going smoothly

Plenty of children take a few false starts, and that’s completely normal. Illness, a new sibling, or starting care can all set things back for a while, and pushing through rarely helps. If your child becomes distressed, it’s fine to pop the nappies back on and try again in a few weeks. Most settle into it before they turn four. If you’re worried about ongoing constipation, holding on, or pain, it’s worth a chat with your GP or child health nurse. The Continence Foundation of Australia is another trustworthy place to turn for practical guidance.

Our educators use the same gentle, child-led approach to toilet training at the childcare Croydon parents in the Inner West choose.
